Northeast Florida's New Area Code is: 386

A needed change.

Florida's communications needs are growing. So, Florida has added area code 386 to accommodate this growth.

What will change and what will stay the same

It's all in the numbers.

Effective November 5, 2001, you must dial new area code 386 for long distance calls made to or within the new area code region. Extended Area Service (EAS) calling rates will not be affected by this change. Local calling areas and rates, as well as seven-digit dialing, will remain the same.*

Area code 386 serves portions of northeast Florida previously served by area code 904 (and 407 in the DeBary Exchange).

Area code 904 was retained in Nassau, Duval, Clay, St. Johns, Baker and a portion of Bradford Counties.

*Local calls between the following areas will need to be dialed using ten-digits (area code plus the seven-digit number): Palatka (386) and Hastings (904); Lake City (386) and Macclenny (904).

What you should do

Ready. Set. Go.

If your area code has changed, you should update your checks, stationery, signage, and any other printed materials that include your area code. Don't forget to notify friends, relatives, and others, paying special attention to those outside the new 386 area code.

Businesses should also update business cards, invoices, etc., and notify customers, suppliers, and business associates of the new 386 area code.

Reprogram your equipment

Be prepared.

Whether or not your area code has changed, you may need to reprogram the numbers stored on services like Call Forwarding, Speed Calling, Call Selector, and Call Block.

Businesses should remember to update equipment like fax machines, modems, PBX systems (consult your vendor), or telephone equipment with automatic dialing features. Businesses can test their equipment by calling 386-252-2097.

Wireless customers in the northeast Florida area need to have their cellular phones reprogrammed in order for calls to complete properly. Contact your cellular service vendor for more information.
