    Effective
after September 2, 2001

New Overlay Area Code 470 is Coming to Metro Atlanta.

Why Georgia is adding a new area code

A needed change.

Because Georgia's communications needs are growing, area code 470 will overlay the existing 404/770/678 area code region.

What will change

It's all in the numbers.

After September 2, 2001, new overlay area code 470 will begin to be assigned to new numbers in Metro Atlanta. Since the 404/770/678 area code region already has ten-digit local dialing, the way you dial in this region will remain the same. All local calls to and within this area must be dialed using the appropriate area code, 404/770/678/470, plus the seven-digit number. Local and expanded local calling rates will not be affected by this area code addition. Special services that use three-digit numbers (911 and 411) as well as 1 + ten-digit long distance will remain unchanged.

Reprogram your equipment

Be Prepared.

You may need to reprogram certain telecommunications equipment and services to include the new overlay area code 470. Contact your telecommunications vendor for more information. Businesses can test their equipment by calling 404-666-7777 (toll or usage charges may apply).
