Florida has a new area code: 772

A needed change.

On November 11, 2002, area code 772 will be added to serve portions of the existing 561 area code region.

What will change and what will stay the same

It's all in the numbers.

Effective November 11, 2002, you must dial new area code 772 for long distance calls made to or within the new 772 area code region. Local calling areas and rates, as well as seven-digit dialing, will remain the same.

Area code 772 serves all of Indian River and St. Lucie Counties, most of Martin County and a small portion of Brevard County.

Area code 561 was retained by Palm Beach County and a small portion of Martin County.

Note: Local dialing between Hobe Sound (772) and Jupiter (561) will need to be dialed using ten digits (area code plus the seven-digit number).

What you should do to get ready

Ready. Set. Go.

If your area code has changed, you should update your checks, stationery, signage, and any other printed materials that include your area code. Don’t forget to notify friends, relatives, and others, paying special attention to those outside the new 772 area code region.

Businesses should also update business cards, invoices, etc., and notify customers, suppliers, and business associates of the new 772 area code.

Reprogram your equipment

Be prepared.

Whether or not your area code has changed, you may need to reprogram the numbers stored on services like Call Forwarding, Speed Calling, Call Selector, and Call Block.

Businesses should update equipment like fax machines, modems, PBX systems (consult your vendor), or telephone equipment with automatic dialing features. Businesses can test their equipment by calling 1 772 227-2002 (toll or usage charges may apply).

Wireless customers in the new 772 area code region will also need to reprogram their wireless phones for calls to complete properly. Contact your wireless service vendor for more information.
