Mandatory ten-digit dialing and area code 984 have been postponed in the 919 area code region.  
 
Why is the 984 area code on hold?

The North Carolina Utilities Commission delayed the implementation of area code 984 since effective number conservation, and a change in the way blocks of telephone numbers are assigned to local providers, have eased the need for additional numbering resources.



Will ten-digit dialing also be postponed?


Mandatory ten-digit dialing is also postponed indefinitely until area code 984 is needed. Since some customers and service providers have already made changes in their equipment to accommodate ten-digit dialing, you can continue to use seven or ten digits when placing basic local or expanded local calls.
