Description of Project
Health Promotion Schools of Excellence (HPSE) is an innovative,
comprehensive school health project. This collaborative effort between
Jefferson County Public Schools, the Jefferson County Health Department,
and the Jefferson County Medical Society is fast becoming a national
model for community initiatives to improve the health and fitness
of youth. Now operating in 46 District schools, the program focuses
on four key areas: cardiovascular disease, cancer control, injury
prevention, and physical fitness. Each school strives to increase
health knowledge and to affect attitudes and behaviors of students,
staff, and parents.
Three Year Goal(s)
Increase student's ability to use technology to acquire and use
health information, set personal goals, improve and maintain their
health status, and complete health assessments. Improve teacher
capability to teach health education curricula.
First Year Outcome Objectives
Develop a health education resource file for teaching and learning
activities. Provide a 5-day comprehensive health institute for 3
school staff members from each of the participating schools. Students
at 5 HPSE schools will use technology to help reach their health
goals by analyzing results of their health assessments.
