Fulton County School - One Year Update

YEAR ONE ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  • Employed competent support personnel
  • Maintained agreement for services of R.N. through Purchase Health Department
  • Developed Data Collection Forms for services rendered
  • Identified elementary students eligible for medical card
  • Continued process of identification of students & families classified as "Working Poor"
  • Added partner to provide needed Dental Services

YEAR ONE LESSONS:

  • Cannot focus programs on one agency or individual - must include partners
  • Must become flexible with "established rules" and focus on needs of program in review of existing policies.
  • Individuals in program must be willing to take "political risks" in order to achieve significant change
  • Partners must agree:

    1. Primary Focus is Prevention
    2. To accept that there is a strong association between the ecological factors of poverty, education, maternal and family stress and emotional stability with the health and well being of both parents and child
    3. To believe in the preservation of family centered, coordinated care.
    4. To recognize that treatment services often come too late in a family's life and are very costly.

YEAR TWO OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES:

  • Transcend focus of program from treatment to prevention (wellness)
  • Place more emphasis on early childhood health interventions
  • Continued to develop and deliver services through the Dental Outreach Program
  • Expand and enhance public relations efforts to build public and School Board support for the project
