Today's students are getting an inside look at what happens on the job, thanks to the BellSouth Job Shadowing program.
For the past two years, BellSouth has teamed up with national partners America's Promise and Junior Achievement to introduce young people to the workplace. This year, more than 4,100 students across the nation celebrated Groundhog Day BellSouth-style from the last days in January through the first days of February, spending a half-day "shadowing" an adult in the workplace.
The BellSouth Job Shadowing program aims to provide its students:
Students participating in the BellSouth Job Shadowing program spend a half-day visiting a variety of company departments to learn about the varied skills required to work in a telecommunications industry. The students spend the morning working with a BellSouth employee, or Connector, who leads them through a typical day. Students are encouraged to actively explore the work environment with their Connectors.
After a morning "on the job," students, teachers and employees discuss what the students have seen, heard and learned. Students are required to complete a questionnaire and participate in exercises to reflect on their experiences.
In January 1998 BellSouth received the Hammer Award for its Job Shadowing program. The concept of the Hammer Award was initiated by Vice President Al Gore to honor organizations that display a commitment to advance education solutions by developing innovative and beneficial programs.
