Environmental, Health & Safety

EnvironmentTelecommunications is an industry that is generally considered to be, and is, a “clean” industry. We recognize the environmental impacts of running a business. As a company, we operate a fleet of approximately 26,000 vehicles, occupy over 3,000 facilities, annually print over 190 million paper bills, publish directories, and work to ensure that the network infrastructure running throughout our operating region stays up and running 24/7. In addition, many of our employees live and work in metropolitan areas challenged with congested roadways. BellSouth recognizes our responsibilities in the environmental area and is committed to serving the communities and businesses in which we operate in a way that minimizes the impact of our operations on the environment.
BellSouth also recognizes that our technologies and services can provide environmental benefit by enabling our customers to minimize the adverse impacts they may have on the environment. By using teleconferencing, videoconferencing, remote worker programs, telemonitoring services, teleconsultation services, voice mail, digital fax, internet access, on-line directories, and interactive 2-way paging, our customers can conserve resources and reduce energy consumption and the related air emissions by reducing their transportation, printing and shipping needs, the amount of office space and equipment needed, and increasing efficiency. SafetyBellSouth is dedicated to providing a safe and healthy workplace for all of our employees and operating safely in and around the homes, businesses and public right-of-ways we service everyday. BellSouth has a strong heritage of concern for the safety and health of our employees. As stated in our Corporate Values, "We respect each other. We work together as one BellSouth team." As a part of a team, we become responsible for each other. Our goals should always include activities aimed at encouraging safe behaviors and eliminating unsafe conditions before they result in an injury or illness. People are important to BellSouth and, therefore, safety is important to BellSouth. In today’s competitive business environment, it is vitally important that we never forget our safety responsibilities. Each and every employee at BellSouth is responsible for knowing and
following the BellSouth Safety Creed:
The need for safety is always with us and will continue to be as BellSouth’s business grows and transforms at increasing rates in technology areas never thought possible in past years. As BellSouth continues to innovate its network and business processes, we intend to keep focused on the need to be vigilant towards safety. |
