Friday
Wrap-Up - BellSouth Senior Classic
By Web Webster
Partly
cloudy skies, temperatures in the low eighties and a flawless
Springhouse golf course were the perfect antitheses to the
sloppy weather and high - scoring play that marked the first
round of the U.S. Open up in New York. The ninth annual
BellSouth Senior Classic got off to a low-flying start Friday
with Jay Sigel carding a 1st round eight-under to lead by
2 strokes over Dana Quigley.
Hailing
from Bryn Mawr, PA, Sigel opened the day with a birdie on
the first hole and held fast through the turn with birdies
at 8 and 9 that closed out his first 9 holes 4-under. Rounding
the turn Sigel put more distance between himself and the
pack with a eagle on 12 and closed with a birdie at 18.
Trailing
Sigel and tied for second, Dana Quigley and Walter Hall
each carded 66's. A string of Quigley birdies was shot down
when he bogied holes 12 and 14, ending the day two strokes
behind the leader with a 66. 14 proved to be a speed bump
for Walter Hall as well, who only shot 5 birdies in the
first 14 holes of play.
One
stroke behind the Quigley and Hall, Miller Barber shot a
67...impressive not only within the field assembled here
in Nashville, but made more so because he shot 4 less than
his age. These guys are good, indeed. Joining Barber tied
for fourth at 67 are Lee Trevino, Dave Eichelberger, Gil
Morgan, Jim Ahern, Morris Hatalsky and SENIOR TOUR rookie
Fuzzy Zoeller.
With
cooler temperatures and lower humidity predicted for the
weekend, the playing conditions will be excellent for scoring.
With Friday's leader within 2 strokes of the course record
62 (shared by BellSouth Senior Classic champions Dave Stockton
and Isao Aoki), Saturday and Sunday should prove to be an
exciting two rounds of golf.
